This sequence of pictures illustrates the opening of the Jordan lift railroad bridge heading into Norfolk, VA.  The bridge in the background is always up unless a train is coming, but the bridge in the foreground is constantly raised and lowered.

Scenes going from the industrial southern end of the river toward Norfolk, VA.  After industry, the city begins with nice apartment buildings.  Below, a ship is floated onto a platform which is then raised out of the water so the bottom of the ship can be painted.  Lower right,  a tug pushes a barge with dredging equipment.

All manner of boats and water craft are seen along the rivers and bays.  Above right is a Navy ship protected by orange floats warning other boaters and ships to stay far away.  This measure of protection was implemented after 9/11.

Leaving Hampton Roads and passing Old Point Comfort Lighthouse as we headed out into the Chesapeake Bay.
