One day we bought fish from a local fisherman. As he cleaned the fish, birds hovered, ready to catch the discarded parts.

Because of the island's geography, planes have an unusual landing pattern coming into Union. The airport is small and you can stand just behind the fence at the end of the runway to experience the sound and wind of the incoming planes.

Shopping is good at Captain Gourmet, run by a French couple who bake bread and make yogurt and a Boursin-type cheese.

An open-air market offers fresh fruits and vegetables ferried in from St. Vincent. Over the past four years, we've watched our favorite vendor grow from a gangly teen into a self-assured young woman.
